. Welcome to the Forum ! FWIW, I've been hunting with peep sights for about 50 years now, so I would WAG that the comments you heard were from folks that like or need a scope - or they've used a peep sight improperly. (peep apertures should be simply looked 'through', and not 'at', with no conscious effort to center the front sight in the aperture) Target-shooting sights generally differ from hunting sights, in that target sights should be finer, and black (to stand out from the target paper w/o glare). Besides different blade heights for various applications, bead front sight blades are made in two bead diameters ( 1/16'-fine & 3/32'-coarse) and use different materials for the bead (Gold, Ivory, fiber-optic, etc). Replacement front sight blades of different types are made by Williams, Lyman, Marble's, Skinner, TruGlo, Hi-Viz & others. (your rifle has standard 3/8' wide, front-to-back dovetails) Additionally, FO sights are available in different colors (red, amber, yellow, green) from various makers (see below), in order to accommodate different folk's color perceptions. I've found a fiber-optic front sight (Williams FireSight, TruGlo, Hi-Viz, etc) to be the best for hunting, except when the sight is in direct/bright sunlit open areas, and/or over snow-covered ground - but YMMV. There are a few makes of 'clip-on' peep sights that fit onto your BL-22's scope mount grooves (Skinner, Williams WGRS, NECG) - but, since all are top-mounted, will require a new front sight blade that's taller than the issue front sight, in order to zero the rifle. The correct/new/taller front sight blades are available from Skinner Sights, Lyman Products, Marble's Outdoors & the Williams Gun Sight Co, to name but a few. A rear barrel open/iron sight for your BL-22 can be problematic, since Browning dovetails, while the same/correct 3/8' size, are usually cut deeper into the barrel - which causes interference between the top of the barrel and the lower part of the sight, just above it's male dovetail. If whoever installs the rear sight is knowledgable & handy, however, the sight might be able to (depending on the make/style) be altered to fit by removing the interfering lip from the sight so it will seat in the barrel dovetail. . |
