Saamy is a 2003 Indian Tamil-language action film written and directed by Hari. The film was presented by K. Balachander and produced by Pushpa Kandasamy under banner Kavithalayaa Productions. The film stars Vikram and Trisha in lead roles and Kota Srinivasa Rao (debut in Tamil cinema) in a negative role. Music was composed by Harris Jayaraj. Upon release, the film was highly successful at the box office. It was remade in Telugu as Lakshmi Narasimha (2004) starring Nandamuri Balakrishna, in Bengali as Barood starring Mithun Chakraborty, loosely in Kannada as Ayya (2005) starring Darshan and later in Hindi as Policegiri (2013) starring Sanjay Dutt.

Like other films directed by Hari, this film also specialises a particular city and this time it is Tirunelveli. Saamy along with Kaakha Kaakha started a trend of police films in Tamil such as Bheeshmar, Gambeeram, Anjaneya and many others. A sequel, Saamy Square, was released in 2018.[3]

Plot[edit]

Aarusaamy (Vikram) is the DCP of Tirunelveli who efficiently brings the city under control. He arrives at Tirunelveli after being in exile for some years, due to being wrongly accused of bribery. In an early scene in the film, he eats idli with beer and performs drunken antics, which had a negative impact on the viewing public. At the outset, he pretends to be a corrupt cop by accepting bribes from the very influential Annachi Perumal Pichai (Kota Srinivasa Rao).

Aarusaamy's father (Vijayakumar) wanted to become a cop in the 70s, but he was unable to due to corruption. So, he takes care of agriculture as his living, but he wanted to make his son a cop. Aarusaamy passes the TNPSC Group 1 exams, but was asked for bribes. His father mortgages his properties and makes him get the desired job. Being an honest cop, Aarusaamy is honored with transfers all over Tamil Nadu due to political pressure. In Trichy, he is accused of bribery and gets suspended. It takes him about 2 years to prove his innocence, and he is finally posted in Tirunelveli.

In Tirunelveli, he adapts a new policy of adjusting with the local goons so he can serve the people in an effective way. Perumal Pichai is an underworld don who has the total control of Southern Tamil Nadu, both in politics and rowdyism. He is less known in the media so he bribes Aarusaamy so that he will not disturb his business because he thinks that Aarusaamy belong to his caste. Aarusaamy accepts it but requests him to make some changes, which he in turn accepts. As a result, the city is under the control of Law and Order. Aarusaamy is always accompanied by 'Punctuality' Paramasivam (Ramesh Khanna), who is a Police Inspector.

Aarusaamy falls in love with a college-going Brahmin girl Bhuvana (Trisha). Bhuvana's father Srinivasan (Delhi Ganesh) is a straightforward government officer who never gets a bribe and leads a noble life and they get engaged. Aarusaamy and Bhuvana meet each other when Aarusaamy goes with Paramasivam in search of a home for rent. Bhuvana misinterprets Aarusaamy and Paramasivam as thieves and locks them in a room, only to be revealed of their identities by the police. Aarusaamy also 'seals' Perumal's gas station because the workers assaulted a woman and others when they challenged them a very less distribution of petrol than being promised.

The ruling party has called for a one-day strike all over the state, and Perumal is handed with the responsibility of Tirunelveli on the eve of Pongal festival. Aarusaamy takes steps to maintain law and order. The strike becomes a failure, which earns Perumal's rage. Perumal was waiting for a chance to take revenge on Aarusaamy. So, his henchmen attack the marketplace on the day of Aarusaamy and Bhuvana's marriage, since all the prime policemen would be attending the wedding. Saamy witnesses the brutality of annachi's men, and this incident starts the fight of Aarusaamy against Perumal.

This incident marks the start of a direct clash between Aarusaamy and Perumal. Aarusamy is given his transfer order to Dindigul, with one week duty remaining in Tirunelveli city. Saamy challenges to close Annachi's empire and finish him in that week.

Day 1: Saamy and police seal off all of annachi's illegal businesses and vehicles.

Day 2: Saamy arrest's Annachi's henchman MLA IR8 sundaram on false rape charges and he is imprisoned.

Day 3: False bomb threats make Saamy and police force waste searching main parts of the city. It is revealed that another of Annachi's henchman MLA Govindan's work. Penal code kenya pdf download. Saamy then blasts govindan's car and frames it as a bomb blast, to save his name.

Day 4: The commissioner grants permission for a caste-based rally, to be led by MLA govindan, against Saamy's recommendation. While Annachi's men plan to create ruckus and kill Saamy in the rally, Saamy plans to covertly finish pending crime-files in the rally.

Day 5: During the rally, Saamy's local friends create ruckus before Annachi's men can get hands on their weapons. Saamy uses the situation to kill 2 of Annachi's main rowdies using his illegal pistol. He arrests MLA Govindan and locks him up.

Day 6: Annachi's men try to kill Saamy outside a temple. He beats them blue and black, and arrests them. He sends his wife to Palani by Bus. In the evening, after listening to Annachi's phone calls, Saamy realises that Annachi has planned to bomb somewhere. He meets with Annachi's henchman who he spared in the rally shooting. he convinces the henchman to turn approver. Saamy then finds that the bomb is in his house. Unknown to Saamy, Saamy's dad has come to his house. Despite Saamy's attempts, bomb blasts and Saamy's dad is killed. The bomb maker and annachi's henchman give statements to the District magistrate, and Saamy get arrest warrant for Annachi. The district authorities and ministers convene an emergency meeting to stop Saamy. They state the proofs of bribe Saamy got from annachi as reason. Saamy counters that, by showing proofs that Saamy himself sent all that bribe to CM relif fund in Annachi's name. After all discussions, Saamy threatens to murder anyone who obstructs his duty, and leaves to arrest Annachi.

Day 7 (Early morning): Saamy gives news to the media, that Annachi has absconded, and police are searching for him. Saamy routes annachi to his own Sand quarry. After a brief fight, Annachi surrenders to Saamy and asks for arrest. Saamy refuses, saying that if he arrests Annachi, he will face dire consequences in future, and innocent people will also suffer. So he kills annachi with his illicit revolver, and burns his corpse in a Brick kiln nearby, so that no one will try to replace or avenge the absconding Annachi, and thus no harm done. Saamy then does the rites for his deceased dad.

Critical reception[edit]

Sify wrote:'The patchy storyline merely serves as a pretext to spark off several skirmishes and bombastic dialogues. Ultimately it is Vikram who dominates this action movie. In fact he is the mainstay of the picture [sic] Director Hari packs in a sting, but Saamy is strictly for the no holds barred action addicts'.Heroine Trisha also received praise from the critics:' Trisha is appealingly sensual and looks glamarous as the brahmin girl Bhuvana and brings out the nuance of her character well.'[9] Her performance in the song Pudichirikku made her a sex symbol among the navel fetish community.'Who can forget the song Pudichirukku… from Saamy where she displays oodles of sensuousness and glamour in a leather mini skirt?'[10] Bizhat called it:'taut, fully engaging actioner'.[11] Hindu wrote:'Kavithalaya's Saami should follow the Dhil, Dhool line. Vikram's daredevilry and macho appeal ought to go down well with the masses. His presence of mind and intelligence are bound to make an impression on those who expect something more'.[12]

New York CityWater Tunnel No. 3 is a water supply tunnel forming part of the New York City water supply system. It is being built by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to provide New York City with a third connection to its upstate water supply. Water Tunnel No. 3 is the largest capital construction project in New York City history. The tunnel will be more than 60 miles long, travel 500 feet below street level in sections, will cost over $6 billion. Construction began in 1970 and is expected to be completed in 2020; the tunnel will serve as a backup to Water Tunnel No. 1, completed in 1917, Water Tunnel No. 2, completed in 1936. The project was authorized in 1954 and was imagined as 'the greatest nondefense construction project in the history of Western Civilization.' The city determined that it needed a third water tunnel so that Tunnels 1 and 2 could be closed for inspection and repairs. Stage One construction of Tunnel 3 began in 1970 and completed in 1993; this portion was put into cost about $1 billion.

This first section was bored through bedrock between 250 and 800 feet underground, using drilling and blasting techniques. Section one is 13 miles long and starts at Hillview Reservoir in Yonkers, New York crosses under Central Park in Manhattan, to reach Fifth Avenue at 78th Street. From there it runs under the East Roosevelt Island into Astoria, Queens, it is a concrete-lined tunnel, 24 feet in diameter and reduces to 20 feet in diameter before connecting to 14 vertical shafts. Stage Two comprises two sections; the Brooklyn and Queens section runs 10 miles and begins in Red Hook, where it connects to the Richmond Tunnel for Staten Island. It passes through Park Slope, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick before reaching Maspeth, Queens. From Maspeth it runs through Woodside and Astoria, where it connects to the end of the Stage One section; the Brooklyn section is 16 feet in diameter, the Queens section is 20 feet. The Manhattan section runs for 9 miles, it begins at a valve chamber in Central Park, runs south along the west side of Manhattan, curves around the southern end of the island to come partway through the Lower East Side.

A spur of the Manhattan tunnel begins on the west side at 34th Street, goes to the east side and turns north under Second Avenue to about 59th Street. The tunnel itself was completed in 2008, after the construction of riser shafts was completed, the tunnel opened in 2013. What used to be called Stage Three is now being referred to as a separate project, the 'Kensico–City Tunnel.' It will be 24 feet in diameter, running from the Kensico Reservoir in Westchester to the Van Cortlandt Valve Chamber complex in the Bronx. Stage Four is a proposed tunnel that would start at the Hillview Reservoir, pass through the eastern Bronx and through Queens, where it would meet the Stage Two section; the largest valve chamber is in Van Cortlandt Park. It is built 250 feet below the park surface; when completed it will control the flow of water from the city's Delaware systems. These systems provide 90 percent of the city's current drinking water; the Van Cortlandt Park Valve Chamber is 43 feet wide and 41 feet high.

The complex has nine vertical shafts. Each manifold is 560 feet long and 24 feet in diameter and is projected to be finished in 2020. Since 1970, when construction on the tunnel began, 24 people have died in construction-related accidents; this includes 23 workers and a 12-year-old boy, Don-re Carroll, who died while exploring uncapped water pipes in the Bronx. No deaths have occurred since 1997. In 2002, New York City MayorMichael Bloomberg made completion of the tunnel a priority, set a goal date of 2021. In 2016, a New York Times report stated that New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio was postponing completion of the project indefinitely. However, the next day the mayor stated that this was a miscommunication between his press office and the Times, that the completion date was being pushed up to 2020. Scenes from the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance were filmed in Tunnel No. 3. Payback, a 1997 novel by Thomas Kelly, includes 'the twenty-three men who have died building New York CityWater Tunnel Number Three' among those to whom it is dedicated.

Billy Adare, one of the principal characters, is a sandhog working on the tunnel whose father was killed in the early stages of its construction. Payback was re-released in 2008 with the new title Sandhogs; the CSI: NY episode 'A Man a Mile' deals with the death of a sandhog during construction of Water Tunnel No. 3. In Spider Robinson's novel Night of Power, Tunnel No. 3 is depicted as an abandoned project, taken over as the secret headquarters for a revolutionary movement. In Linda Fairstein's 2007 novel Bad Blood, Tunnel No. 3 deals with the interconnection between a homicide case and the sandhogs working in Tunnel No. 3 and other NYC tunnels for generations. The Nova episode 'The Hidden City' included a segment on the construction of the tunnel. Scenes of the final episode of season 4 of The Strain were filmed in Tunnel No. 3. John H. Rot an der Rot Abbey was a Premonstratensian monastery in Rot an der Rot in Upper Swabia, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It was the first Premonstratensian monastery in the whole of Swabia; the imposing structure of the former monastery is situated on a hill between the valleys of the rivers Rot and Haslach. The monastery church, dedicated to St Verena, the convent buildings are an important part of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. Apart from the actual monastic buildings, a number of other structures have been preserved among which are the gates and the economy building. Rot an der Rot was first mentioned as Rota in a donation by Adelbert von Wolfertschwenden around the year 1100. Together with the church and the inn, the village formed most the centre of a manor. According to local tradition the monastery was founded under the name of Mönchroth in 1126 by Hemma von Wildenberg with active participation of Norbert of Xanten. Though the foundation date is confirmed by an entry in the annals of Altenmarkt Abbey a Premonstratensian monastery, the personal involvement of Norbert of Xanten cannot be ascertained.

The first monks to settle at Rot an der. From the time of its foundation the monastery was directly subordinate to the pope and not to a local or regional ecclesiastical chapter. Shortly after 1126 around 1140, a nunnery was added to Rot an der Rot Abbey, not unusual for the Premonstratensian order. By close proximity to a monastery the nuns were provided with pastoral care; this nunnery continued to exist until the second half of the 14th century. The first prior of the abbey was Burkhard sent by Norbert of Xanten from the mother house Prémontré near Laon in northern France together with twelve monks. Burkhard's work was so successful that in 1137 the first filial institution was founded in Wilten near Innsbruck following a request by bishop Reginbert of Brixen. Burkhard's successor, abbot Ottino, led the monastery, consisting by now of 200 monks, to its first prosperous period and increased the number of filial institutions. Between 1145 and 1171 the following monasteries were founded: Weissenau Abbey, Schussenried Abbey, Steingaden Abbey and Marchtal Abbey.

In 1182 the abbey had possessions not only around Rot an der Rot and in the nearby valley of the Iller but had managed to acquire possessions on the Swabian Jura, near Lindau, around Hüttisheim and Untermoorweiler. In a charter dated from 1179, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa declared himself Vogt of the abbey, laying the foundation for the Imperial immediacy. In 1182 a devastating conflagration destroyed the original foundation documents and imperial privileges. A Papal bull by Lucius III published the same year replaced the lost documents and assigned the foundation of the monastery to Hemma von Wildenberg and two of her male relatives. By 1182 the village of Rot was in the possession of the monastery being the administrative and pastoral centre of the parish, became integrated into the economic structure of the monastery. By acquisitions and donations the abbey managed to extend its possessions until its territory was a closed area around the villages of Rot and Haslach. By incorporating parishes, the monastery secured its economic prosperity.

In 1338 the abbey received a grant exempting it from the jurisdiction of secular courts. Following the Great Plague of 1348 fewer members of the landed gentry joined the monastery but more and more farmers and members of the middle class resulting in a decrease in the acquisition of lands. Crop failures, wars and an economic crisis lasting for decades accelerated the decline of the abbey until, in 1391, only three monks were left; the abbot of Weissenau Abbey, an abbey founded as a filial institution by monks from Rot an der Rot took control and in 1407 King Rupert installed Seneschal John II of Waldburg as governor of the abbey. The restoration of the fortunes of Rot an der Rot Abbey began with Abbot Henrich Merk and was continued by his successor Martin Hesser, called the second founder of Rot an der Rot. In Constance in 1425 an alliance was forged with most of the other Swabian abbots to defend the monasteries' rights against the intervention of noble family members of monks. Martin Hesser expedited the restoration of monastic life and the restitution of the monastery's mortgaged and sold property as well as the rebuilding of the monastery buildings.

Since 1458 Rot an der Rot Abbey had the financially lucrative right to occupy the incorporated parishes with priest from the monastery.
